How can you tell if you're banned

...and if you are, what are the steps to get back on there. Or is it not that simple ?

Some times there is a chance to get reinstated but not always. But most of the time Banned = gone for ever

Good links lefty, seems those sites think google in spam state should take closer look on their contents, coding up to practice of link building.

If you have a Google Webmaster account, then you will find an option by the name-reconsider. Suppose your site has been banned due to certain reasons you can ask for reconsideration through this "reconsider" option in webmaster account.

There are several penalties. Ie the -60 penalty takes you around 60 below your previous rankings. If you're completely banned you won't appear even when you search for your own domain name.
