Robots.txt is a text file, that is present in the root folder of the server. It contain commands about how the website should be crawled. The commands are understood by search engine crawlers and accordingly search engine bots crawls or blocks specific pages, directories or subdomains.

The robots exclusion standard, also known as the robots exclusion protocol or simply robots.txt, is a standard used by websites to communicate with web crawlers and other web robots. The standard specifies how to inform the web robot about which areas of the website should not be processed or scanned.

robots.txt is the text file for control the search engine crawls which pages want to crawl and which pages don't want to crawl.

Robots.txt a text file created by webmasters that instruct web robots how to crawl pages in their website. This file also indicates whether the pages of their website should be crawled or not. The crawl instructions are “allowing” or “disallowing” which are specified by user agents.
