Do link building and on page optimization. If you do not know how to do that, research more.

Basically for getting higher page ranking in the Google and search engines 2 things are important:

Onsite Optimization:

First select the keywords, for which you want to make your website.

Now use these keywords in natural way in the important places of your page, like title, metatags, first paragraph, H1, H2..H6, ALT tags of images, BOLD etc.

Your keyword density should be at least 8%.

All the pages of your website should be accessible by 3 clicks, at the maximum, from any page.

Offsite Optimization:

Submit to Google and Yahoo and MSN.

Search for top and related forums and blogs (related to your website's theme).

Participate in the active discussions and in the signature of your posts, give the link of your website. This is called creating a backlink.

When you will be successful in creating at least 1000 backlinks, you can expect good traffic.

The backlink's quality is another important factor. If the backlink is on the site which has high page rank, say PR4 or PR5 then it is good link. If the link is coming from the site, that is discussing the same topic as your site is, then it is called a good link. If the text in the backlink is your keywords, then it a good link.

If you are able to do these above things, you will ranked at first page of Google for your keywords in a very short time.

To get top ranking in google you should do link building to get back links but links should be relevent to your site. dont worry about page rank.

Another important and free traffic source is digg.com

You can signup for free and upload your story. If your story is really interesting and can get 50+ diggs or votes within 24 hours, then your story may remain of the top page of digg. If you are successful in this, your site will be flooded with thousands of visitors in a single day. But don't scam or spam.
