Interesting questions. Anchor text is very important. That’s how search engines understand about a page. The anchor text must be our keywords. Keywords are not too long. So it is kept short. PR is not dependant on anchor text but on count of inward links from high PR pages.

Anchor text represent your site into other related sites. Putting your targeted keywords on it would increase its ranking to different search engines. When spiders crawl them, it would be a bump up to search engine ranking.

Like what other's saying it's very important in terms of SERP.It's better to use different variation of keywords as your anchor text to improved SERP.
