Its make or break,,and getting to the top will only ever get harder,with thousands of new sites each day.
My thought of the day is that: If you have an idea,at least register your domain and get some content up.

If you could show, tackle and give much different information about the certain topic you're targeting, there is big chance that you will make on top. As google loves unique and useful information unlike those who exists and seemed to be the same.

Yea, Correct. When we do a search for specific term millions of results will come. But out of million's only thousand's will do SEO. So getting to top of search result is not hard if we do continuous SEO.

Getting links from relevant sites and building quality and fresh content does help a site garner top rankings in the SERP of Google.

I agree with jetpilot123, a good brandable domain goes a long way by helping in SEO as well as in recall.

Doing an extensive keyword and competitor research is also very important to find the kind of effort that will be required to rank well in Google.

A lot of people use freely available CMS and Shopping carts and custom mods for those help improve SEO and should be considered.

It is hard to get on top of Google but if you just choose quality links for your site it will help.
