Thanks for reminding us of google's humble start. It should be mentioned that founders wanted to name the website googol but the first check made for them had an incorrect spelling Google and that's how the company was named.

HITS was another popular algorithm that talked about similar voting from links.

Both founders dropped out from their Phd program and started the mighty company.
