301 redirect - pls help

[stnnetindia]

Can anyone help me out for writing script for "w-w-w 301 redirection" to my site. i want all my site to be redirect to www

Site is normal HTML and i have tried .htacess script, but how to check whether it is working??? i came to know that "RewriteEngine" should be ON for this script. i am using Linux server and from web hosting vendor side they said nothing to do with server settings.. pls help

When i put script file on server, no effect is happening.. if i put my site name alone in address bar, wil it automatically add www which can be seen in address bar?? is this the way for checking?

pls advice
