i've found the most success by having a mix of both. on some sites on the content network, the image ads seem to really convert... but in general i get the best traffic and conversions from text ads.

real key is to set up multiple ads and monitor frequently

I prefer to use both. Text ads do have higher conversion while the images as like what others said it do easily attract your users to click it. One simple technique on text ads is that it should appear like natural texts on your site by matching its color to the content of your page.

Sometimes it depends on your site, there are sites where image ads is better like sites for children, images can attract them easily.
