Need some help with <H1> text
I have read various articles about the need to use H1 text to increase prominance for keywords. But I still can't figure out exactly what is required. Is H1, H2 etc merely a definition of text size starting from biggest? Also, when I look at my code, I don't see any reference to "H-anything" let alone H1 or H2 etc. Can anyone give me one sentence to set me in the right direction.

H1 and other H tags used to be a big factor. I don not think it is such a big factor anymore. Lot's of page rank higfh without having that. More important are links and Title Tag.
H1 can be insterd using most Web page design software. In html, it would look something like this:
<h1>This is H1 Text</h1>
or
<h3>This is H3 text</h3>
It is not the same as Large Text as changing your font size.

Yes, that is exactly what it is. Stands for Heading 1. <h1>Heading here</h1>colin wrote: Is H1, H2 etc merely a definition of text size starting from biggest?

H1 tag importance
As far as I know <H1> tag is still important. It is used not for increasing the font size, but for focusing the search engines on the important keyphrase within web site content. I think <H1> tag should not be ignored by webmasters.

Header tags, along with bold and italic tags are still useful to emphasize keywords of pages. Use them.

Hi,
Header tags should not be ignored and are an important part of SEO, the size color and font of the headers can also be controlled, like in this html example below:
<style type="text/css">
h1{
font-family:verdana;
color:navy;
font-size:9px;
margin-bottom:0px;
}
</style>
<h1>Your header text in your font, size and color!</h1>
Regards,
Paul.

Here are some tips for optimizing H1 and H2 tags:
* IMPORTANT: More is not better, don't overuse!Limit each page to one H1 & 1-2 H2s, then use H3s
* Limit length of heading tags; less words to take away weight from your target phrase
* Include exact target phrases with-in heading tags, but use variations to avoid obvious repetition
* Place target phrases toward the front of heading tags for best performance
* Place heading tags in order. H1 should appear first in code, the H2 and so on
* Support the heading tag with content; each heading should precede a body of relevant content
* TIP: Style your H1, H2 & H3 headings using CSS to change their appearance - standard headings are not visually appealing.
* TIP: Avoid using CSS to hide your heading tags (yes it's technically possible using 'visibility: none;' ) This can cause you more trouble with search engines including devaluating content or even a ban.
Hope that helps!
