I've found blog and news commenting works well as long as you can find follow links as many of them are no follow. In generating backlinks, I think that one should apply some SEO techniques for that to happen. There are many kinds of link building. Social Bookmarking, blog commenting, directory submission, forum posting, etc. I really prefer forum posting since you will be able to share some thoughts and ideas to other people.
