How do you know if a site is penalized in Google? Is there anyway to check?

It is very easy to check. Do these:

1- Check your PageRank via Google toolbar. Is your PageRank zero?
2- Check your back links in Google, by typing link:www.domain.com for your domain name. Does your site have many links to it, but Google is not showing any?
3- Did you have any rankings that have now dissapeared?

If the answer is yes to all the above then chances are that you are penalized.

How long does the penalty last..

The penalty may be permenant or it may expire in one year. Only Google will know this. I suggest that if you are penalized, first clean up the spam and then contact google at webmaster@google.com.

If your page rank is 0, it does not mean that you are penalized...if the page rank bar is grayed out instead of white, it means you are penalized...Google will, at times, let you know what you did wrong so you can fix it. (If they have a way to contact you.)
