If you want to get the number one spot on Google, then there are two types of search optimization you should employ in your business. The first one is on-page search engine optimization (SEO) and the second strategy is off-page search engine optimization. If you want your site to be indexed correctly it is important that your site has basic SEO factors in place like header tags, meta tags, alt tags, the correct keyword density of your site etc.

However, on-page optimization will only make small changes to your ranking and it will not help you to get the top spot in search engines. Not that you should ignore on-page optimization, but it is the off-page optimization factors that will help your site to climb the ranking ladder.

So, for the purpose of this article we'll focus more on off-page factors.

Using Link Building and Relevance for Search Optimization

Although, according to Google there are over 200 components of their ranking algorithm, the amount of quality links that points to your website is by far the most important factor in determining your ranking in the search engines. Links are viewed as 'votes' for a page's importance and the more votes a page has, the more important it is and it will get a higher ranking. So link building is very important if you want to get to the top of Google's search results and in the process get a ton of free traffic to your site.

Getting a link is not difficult, but it's the quality of the link that is important, not the amount or quantity. If you get a backlink from an authority site it is worth much more than an irrelevant link from a site not related to your maket. Getting these high quality links are not easy, but if you include good content in your site it will automatically get natural links. If other website owners like your articles they would want to link to your site.

If you try to take shortcuts by buying links that are against Google's policy guidelines you will get penalized. If the search engine sees anything out of the ordinary, like a sudden jump in the amount of sites linking to you they will not it's not natural and will discount the links.

Rather use natural link building strategies like, article marketing, blog & forum posts, directory submissions, social bookmarking and then you don't have to worry about being banned by search engines. I know this might seem like a lot of work to do, but remember you can outsource most of these tasks to places like Elance and in doing so you can leverage your time much better.

To sum up, if you want to be in the number one position on Google, you must get quality backlinks to your website.

Nice article, but buying links is not really illegal. It really depends on how you do it. It'll not be a ground for getting penalized for as long as you don't do it excessively.
