SEO consists of onpage and offpage optimization. You need to choose a set of keywords then write relevant content. Once the onpage factors of the site are good, proceed to linkbuilding. You can build links through forum posting, article submission, link exchange, etc.

This method will save you a lot of time and energy with your link building campaign.

For your main keywords, identify the highest ranking URLs in Google from your top 20/50 competitors.

Feed these URLs individually into the Submit Express link popularity tool. For each set of results click on the number for Google links in the table to give you the Google backinks (this can also be done with the link:www.domainname command).

Examine these links and pick off the ones that you can use for your own site. As Google only displays a percentage of a site's backlinks repeat this process by clicking on the number of links in the table for Yahoo.

Google is your friend. And yeah I agree with the first reply here, SEO is a broad term and that you should start by optimizing your page first. Article and content submission is usually the first step because that's what drives people to your website in the first place anyways.
