In order to beat your competitors, Start targeting a more regional market with your terms. Add city names, state, country, etc... and you'll see those results drop considerably. That's where you target!
Trying using generic keywords/phrases. Generic phrases are passe. Searchers are getting smarter every day and know that they need to refine their search to get the relevant results they are looking for. Nice article. I think that looking at your competitors is important especially if they are ranking higher than you are. By doing this it gives you a gauge of what to expect from your seo efforts and a timeline as well. Yes the conversion part is important but without traffic what's there to convert? So in short beating your competitors would include site design, keyword research and a look at what sites are linking to them.
