Twitting is the process of communicating as far as BIRDS are concerned. Just kidding. 
I think you're talking about this...twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows its users to send and read other users' updates (otherwise known as tweets).

it relates to tweeting which is when you post on twitter. I don't use twitter, because I don't have a need but I have twine but haven't used it as much.

Twittering is valuable for a a few different reasons: When you "twit" you are (hopefully) promoting your site to a large audience and this can positively your Alexa rankings by sending visitors to your pages. The big drawback is that Twitter gives your links a "No follow" attribute. Search engines like Google and yahoo won't crawl them but ask.com will so it might give you a little added link juice.
